Book Cover

This is a book cover from Communication Arts Illustration Annual. I was first attracted to this piece because it is obviously very well illustrated. I also like this piece because it looks like an old movie poster from the 60s or 70s. The type is very large and noticeable. Its slanting upwards gives the poster an exciting feel. The illustration gives an exciting feel too. I like that the illustrator looked back to old styles to create something new.

This is a wedding announcement from Celebration Graphics Sourcebook. The announcement was for an English/Spanish wedding. I like how it looks like cut paper. It give the announcement a light, lacy look. I also like that the same words are written on both sides, one in english and one in spanish. HEMA

This is a supermarket brand from the @Supermarket: Package Designs. I like this logo because it can be used in many colors, as you can see in the picture. The type is easy to read as well. This logo is also easy to put on many types of products such as bags and packages.

Book Cover

This is a book cover from the book Graphic Design Makeovers. This design is appropriate because it goes with the books theme of political oppression. The imagery gives the book an older feel. I like the colors used. The red makes the book stand out. The "i" in "Polish" also stands out because it is red like the cover. The imagery is appropriate because it is a man with his mouth covered and his eyes are covered. This gives the cover an oppressed look.

Fox Illustration

This is a page from Communication Arts Illustration Annual 49. When I chose this piece I was looking at the illustration in particular. I like how the foxes are drawn. They have a repeating "C" type shape to make the foxes. This shape gives the foxes a natural movement and makes them look like they are pouncing on something. Looking at the rest of the page, I like how clean the layout and type are. The light colors make the red foxes stand out.

New Years Greeting Card

This is a New Years Greeting Card from the book Celebration Graphics Sourcebook by John Stones. I like this card because it is clever. All of the colors are repeated throughout, making the design unified.

Corbis Ad

This is an ad from Communication Arts, Design Annual 52. This is an ad for photography from Corbis Images. I really like how the designer used typography and photography together. If you "take a closer look" like the ad says, you will notice a picture within the words. The swirls coming off of the letters take your eye throughout the whole ad, keeping the viewer intrigued. Also, I like that the ad is very clean and uncluttered.

Chronicle Books

This is a logo for a book publishing company. I picked this logo because of its simplicity. I also like that it looks hand drawn. It makes it so its not too formal. When you think of books, libraries, or book stores, you think of reading and even possibly reading glasses. That is why this logo works. Reading glasses to advertise for books. Its obvious, but a good logo. Overall, this is a very modern-day logo. Its simple and clean, making it a great logo.

Naked Pictures of Famous People

This is a book cover that I found in the book Graphic Design USA: The Annual of the American Institute of Graphic Arts. I was attracted to this piece because I thought it was very clever. I like the fact that the designer used Abraham Lincoln, who everyone knows, on the cover. The fact that there is a censored bar over his eyes is funny because you can clearly tell that it is of Lincoln. I also like where the type is placed and that it is easy to read. The designer placed the type over Lincoln's body to draw attention to the fact that he is naked. Overall, the cover is very intriguing and it makes you want to see whats inside.

Coke Logo

This is a picture from the book Recycling & Redesigning Logos. I think the Coke logo is one of the best because it hasn't changed. It is so recognizable to people. I also like how the logo is used in the advertisement. It was very clever to make the bottle look like it is being pulled by the truck. The logo is big and stands out. I also like the simple colors used. The white gives a nice, clean look and the red is bold and stands out.
